Light, Tender, and Aromatic Rice Every Time

Rice—a simple recipe, yet I’m always forgetting the ratio of rice to water. This recipe serves as my go-to when I need a little reminder of the instructions, and I hope it helps you too! Cooking basmati rice properly ensures each grain stays separate, tender, and full of flavour. Whether you’re pairing it with a curry, daal, or just enjoying it on its own, this method guarantees perfect rice every time.


Ingredients

  • 1 cup basmati rice
  • 1 ½ cups water
  • ½ tsp salt (optional)
  • 1 tsp ghee or butter (optional, for extra flavour)

Instructions

1. Rinse the Rice

  • Place the basmati rice in a bowl and rinse under cold water, gently swishing with your hands.
  • Repeat 3–4 times until the water runs mostly clear. This helps remove excess starch and prevents clumping.

2. Soak the Rice (Optional but Recommended)

  • Soak the rinsed rice in water for 20–30 minutes to help the grains cook evenly.
  • Drain before cooking.

3. Cook the Rice

  • In a medium saucepan, bring 1 ½ cups of water to a boil.
  • Add the drained rice and ½ tsp salt (if using). Stir gently.
  • Once the water returns to a boil, reduce the heat to low, cover with a tight-fitting lid, and let simmer for 12 minutes.

4. Let it Rest

  • Turn off the heat and let the rice sit, covered, for 5–10 minutes. This allows the steam to finish cooking the rice.

5. Fluff & Serve

  • Remove the lid and fluff the rice gently with a fork.
  • For extra flavour, stir in 1 tsp of ghee or butter before serving.

Tips for Perfect Basmati Rice

  • Rinse & Soak – Helps remove excess starch and keeps the grains separate.
  • Water Ratio – Stick to 1 cup rice : 1.5 cups water for stovetop cooking.
  • No Peeking! – Keeping the lid closed while cooking ensures even steaming.
  • For Extra Aroma – Add a bay leaf or a few whole cardamom pods to the water while cooking.
